CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Hinton News) — The West Virginia Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council announced $40 million in funding for sewer and water projects around the state at its meeting on June 5. Details for the projects are listed below. Hancock County Public Service District (PSD) The council approved a $6.5 million grant to the Hancock County PSD for improvements to its sewer system and improvements to the Newell system. These funds, along with funds from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Hancock County Commission and other funding programs, provide $25.6 million for these projects. Robert B. Ouellette Robert B. Ouellette, 72, of Hinton, WV, and Woodbridge, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2024. He was born in Newark, grew up in Belleville, and settled in Woodbridge before retiring to Hinton, WV. Robert adored his many pets; especially his cats, Czarny, Edward, Chloe, and Greycee; and his dogs, Reni and Knox. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping with his children at Stokes State Forest. He was also a die-hard Giants fan and never missed a game. Robert is survived by his loving wife, Judith M. Ouellette of 44 years; his beloved children, Rebecca and Justin Ouellette; his sister, Barbara Mell; and his brother, Raymond Ouellette. He is predeceased by his sister, Ruth Ouellette; and his brother, Thomas Stuart. Graveside services and burial will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at the Ouellette Family Cemetery at Elk Knob. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Pivont Funeral Home in Hinton. Gov. Justice declares Juneteenth 2024 as State holiday in West Virginia, reminds public about annual Juneteenth Celebration
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Hinton News) —Gov. Jim Justice issued a proclamation, officially declaring Juneteenth 2024 as a State holiday in West Virginia. Juneteenth, which is recognized on June 19 each year, celebrates the ending of slavery in the United States. The Juneteenth State holiday this year will be observed on Wednesday, June 19, 2023, as a full-day holiday for all public employees of the State. Gov. Justice also reminds West Virginians that the Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs is hosting a Juneteenth Celebration on the Kanawha Boulevard lawns of the West Virginia Capitol Complex on Saturday, June 15, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. WVU researchers detect traces of heart meds in fish from West Virginia rivers

(Hinton News) — Statins and beta blockers are working their way into the aquatic ecosystem, according to West Virginia University researchers who have discovered evidence of the cardiovascular drugs in fish collected from two West Virginia rivers. Joseph Kingsbury, a doctoral student in natural resources science, and Kyle Hartman, professor of wildlife and fisheries resources at the WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design, published the initial, long-term exposure effects that revealed the presence of statins and beta blockers in the fish sampled from the West Fork and Tygart Valley rivers in Weston and Elkins, respectively. Virginia State Police release information following Beckley WV Man’s Death in Officer Involved Shooting
MONTGOMERY COUNTY Va. (Hinton News) - Jason Lee McDuffy, 44, of Beckley, West Virginia, died at the scene on Peppers Ferry Road in Montgomery County yesterday after being shot by police. The incident began in Giles County when McDuffy was stopped by police with a suspected stolen trailer. McDuffy fled the traffic stop and led police on a chase into Montgomery County and onto Peppers Ferry Road, just outside the Town of Christiansburg. As officers approached the vehicle, McDuffy presented a firearm and was shot by police. The Virginia State Police, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Salem Division, at the request of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, is conducting the investigation. Once the investigation has been completed, the findings will be turned over to the Montgomery County Commonwealth Attorney's Office for review. There will be no further information released by the Virginia State Police about this investigation. Wayside man sentenced to 60 years for computer solicitation of a minor in Virginia
ALLEGHANY COUNTY VA (Hinton News) - On June 3, 2024 in the Alleghany County Circuit Court, Joseph Clay Marks, 40, of Wayside, West Virginia, was sentenced to 60 years in prison to be suspended after serving a 15-year active sentence for computer solicitation of a minor.
