Gov. Justice announces West Virginia Sexual Assault Forensic Examination grant award
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Hinton News) — Gov. Jim Justice announced today that he has awarded $150,000.00 in West Virginia Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE) grant funds to the West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services. Funding will be used to hire, retain, and train a statewide Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) project coordinator who will provide technical assistance to SANEs and qualified medical providers; assist the Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE) Commission by reviewing training curricula, providing subject matter expertise, and participating in workgroups and activities as needed, and create training modules for qualified forensic examiners to meet the legislative rule requirements and training standards. Funds were awarded to the following: West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services – $150,000.00 This funding will be utilized to hire a statewide Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) project coordinator. These funds are administered by the Justice and Community Services (JCS) Section of the West Virginia Division of Administrative Services (DAS). The post Gov. TALCOTT W.Va. (Hinton News) - Long-time John Henry Days volunteers David and Shirla Ballard have been named Parade Marshalls for the 2024 John Henry Days Festival. Shirla and David recently spoke about being named Parade Marshals, volunteering and life. Shirla explained that she was raised in Talcott and that her dad was in the Ruritan Club when the original John Henry statue was brought in and put in its spot up on the hill with the caboose. Homer K. Ball Golf Tournament raises money for Concord University’s scholarships
ATHENS, W.Va. (Hinton News) – The 35th Annual Homer K. Ball Memorial Golf Tournament took place on Friday, June 14 at Pipestem State Park—the proceeds from this tournament fund scholarships for Concord University students. This year the winning men’s team was representing Summit Community Bank with players Randy Price, Dexter Moore, Garry Moore and Bob Ramsey (not pictured). The winning women’s team was from the Elks Club, with players Carolyn Truman, Donna Kowaleski, Sandra Gay and Linda Zirkle. Homer K. Ball, a Lerona native, graduated from Concord in 1948. Throughout his career, he served as Sheriff of Mercer County, West Virginia State Senator, and Director of the Physical Plant at Concord University. Ball was also an avid golfer. In 1991, the annual golf tournament benefiting Concord was named in his honor. After Ball’s passing in 2008, the tournament was renamed the Homer K. Ball Memorial Golf Tournament. The post Homer K.
