HINTON W.Va. (Hinton News) - Hinton's City Council took a historic turn on Tuesday, July 2, as a swearing-in ceremony ushered in a new era of leadership. Janima Bond and Lee Ann Goins, joined incumbent Roberta Sorg to form a majority-female council. Jim Leslie, the sole returning male member, rounds out the four-person body. Mayor Jack Scott was also sworn in, beginning his second term.

Of the new term, Bond said, "I have quite a few projects that I'm excited about. I'm ready to start work on. We do have an issue with housing in the community. And we're already of course addressing dilapidated structures. We have a couple of committees that are working on some housing issues, but I hope to work on that help as many people as we possibly can."

To the Hinton Community, Bond stated, "Thank you. Thank you, everyone who came out and voted. I'm going to do my best not to disappoint. I appreciate them."

Goins said, "One of the things that I spoke of when I was running for an office with economic development and working with local businesses and encouraging new businesses coming to the area. My sister and I started a retail business Hinton Outfitters about two years ago. And we've since then been able to get a brick and mortar space and grow and one of our inspirations for starting that was Botany Tropicals, which they've been very successful here. And we kind of fet off their energy and their success. And one of the things that I would like to see or focus on during Council term is working with the local businesses, uniting them and encouraging new businesses to come."

She went on to speak about Hinton voters, saying, "I'd like to thank them for their support and during this past election, and I'm very humbled and honored to serve. Hinton is my home. I was raised here. I grew up here, my parents still live here and I'm honored that I'm able to serve and give back to the community that has been so good to me all my life."

Sorg said, "I look forward to the next four years, especially with two new people on, continue what we've done and there's some new projects that we can undertake and continue to make Hinton grow and be prosperous."

Leslie stated, “This is an exciting time for Hinton! The two newly elected young women, Lee Ann Goins and Janima Bond, represent the future of our community. They, like myself, ‘Bobbi’ Sorg and Mayor Jack Scott are true Hintonians. We share one commonality: we each love and care for Hinton, and most importantly the future of Hinton. I look forward to another four years of continued growth and development. The City has many projects in process to complete. Here are a few: Batteau Beach at Hinton Landing, CSO project for the Bellepoint community, the Warehouse District at New River Center, redevelopment of 17th Avenue as a main entrance/visitor area to Hinton from I-64, continuance of the StreetScape in the National Historic District, Bridge replacement to our WasteWater Treatment Plant, new sidewalks for the Avis community, new sidewalks for the West End community, and the continued cleanup of the dilapidated properties. We must, and we will, begin construction of new housing throughout the community.”

Finally, Mayor Scott said, "I'm very thankful for the opportunity to serve my community. We made progress in the last four and I'm really excited about the four years in front of us. I'm excited about our new council we have couple of new members and change is inevitable. I look forward the work with them to make a positive difference."

Hinton City Council meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m.
