HINTON, WV (WVNS) — The Veterans Memorial Museum of Southern West Virginia is reaching out to everyone in order to bring awareness to the history housed within its walls.

Hinton’s hidden gem encapsulates the spirit and history of the railroad

The museum was founded in order to give a home to the artifacts that veterans carried home with them from the wars they had fought.

Housing a collection with pieces dating back to the Revolutionary War, the museum is hopeful they will see more visitors.

Tim Wheeler, President of the museum said visitor count is slowly coming back up.

“It went good, real good till Covid hit. Then it started declining some, then it started picking up some this year…more than usual.” said Wheeler.

Jack David Woodrum is on the board of the museum in addition to his duties as a West Virginia senator. He said he feels that the museum is one of the best educational tools Hinton has.

“So, you know, these younger kids I think it’s our responsibility to educate them as to what it means to be an American and I think this museum helps do that.” said Woodrum.

The Veterans Memorial Museum of Southern West Virginia is currently open every Saturday from 11 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon.

Group tours are available by appointment. The museum is located at 419 Ballengee Street in Hinton.
