The Tri-County Department of Health Requires Face Masks in Schools and Child Care Facilities

DENVER, CO - The Tri-County Department of Health, or TCHD, again issued a regulation to suppress the Delta variant which has a spread rate that is twice as fast. The policy in question is to require face masks for residents who are in the room, be it schools or daycare centers that serve children aged 2 to 11 years. The order takes effect in Adams, Arapahoe, and Douglas counties from Monday, August 23, 2021.

According to John M. Douglas, Jr., MD, Executive Director of Tri-County Health Department, until everyone gets the vaccine, there is still a risk of being exposed to the coronavirus, and to minimize this impact, the use of masks can be a solution.

“This is an important step we can take to maximize in-person learning and slow the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant. ”

This mandate should be adhered to regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status, and limited exceptions are specified in public health settings. In addition to using face masks, other mitigation strategies would also be very good if carried out including routine testing, social distancing, hand hygiene, and ventilation to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

This mandate is also in line with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) statement that adhering to health protocols can reduce an individual's exposure to the virus and by reducing the spread of respiratory droplets.
