HOLLAND TWP. — One person is dead and another has serious injuries after a pontoon boat and trailer broke free from the vehicle towing them and struck pedestrians in Holland Township on Sunday.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Quincy Street and 140th Avenue around 2 p.m. Sunday, July 21. Investigation shows that a 44-year-old Holland man was driving a truck west on Quincy, towing a pontoon boat on a trailer behind his vehicle.

The trailer broke free from the truck, left the roadway and struck two pedestrians who were walking on a nearby bike path. Both people were trapped under the boat and trailer and had to be extracted with assistance of Holland Fire/Rescue and other emergency personnel.

One pedestrian, a 62-year-old Holland resident, suffered fatal injuries in the incident. The other, a 38-year-old Holland resident, was flown to a hospital by Aero Med with serious injuries.
