HOLLAND TWP. — Construction on Holland Township’s nearly $15 million community center is making progress and remains on schedule to open in the late spring opening of 2025.

The project officially kicked off in November at The Shops at Westshore in the former Younkers space. According to Township Manager Steve Bulthuis, construction on the elevated track is underway and crews are now preparing to work on the basketball and volleyball court along with six pickleball courts.

“There have been no changes to the scope of the project other than a change to the pickleball flooring that will better accommodate players of all skill levels,” Bulthuis wrote in an email.

He added that "work also continues on the community room, multipurpose rooms and support areas," such as the kitchen and changing areas.

The project has been talked about for close to 20 years, as officials sought to build a central meeting and gathering space in the township. Supervisor Terry Nienhuis said planning has included tours of other local community centers and additional research.

According to plans provided by the township, the main level of the center will include 55,000 square feet of total program area, plus another 19,000 square feet on the mezzanine level.

That includes a full-size basketball court, six pickleball courts, multipurpose rooms, a community multipurpose room, a kitchenette, an eighth-of-a-mile indoor track, open fitness spaces and more.

The township held an open house in November 2023 to launch the project. At that event, it was announced that GDK Construction would be raising the roof to accommodate the indoor basketball court.

As part of the agreement with The Shops at Westshore, the township will rent the space for just $100 per year. The initial agreement is for three years, with the opportunity to renew for six more three-year terms.

The township’s director of recreation, Darrin Duistermars, said the township will operate the center. How the township will manage memberships and hours of operation will be decided at a later date.

“We are excited to bring this amenity to the community and see it as a gathering space for all,” Bulthuis said.
