7 lakeshore restaurants we've said goodbye to in 2024

HOLLAND — Although the first seven months of 2024 have been kind to new restaurant owners along the lakeshore, there have been several notable closures.

Here's a (nonexhaustive) list of some of the restaurants we lost in the first half of 2024:

    Playa Tacos and Tequila

Playa Tacos and Tequila originally posted they were closing for the season in late 2023. But then, in January, a "for sale" sign appeared in front of the building.

The sign marked the end of the restaurant’s short run, which began two years ago. The restaurant replaced the historic Ottawa Beach Inn in Park Township after owner River and Odi Hospitality Group determined the restaurant needed a new look and concept to stay competitive.

The space didn't sit empty for long, though, and is now home to Reservoir .

    Ferris Coffee

Ferris Coffee announced it would close on March 23. The shop at 55 E. Eighth St. was once the beloved JP's Coffee. Ferris purchased the business in 2015, underwent a partial remodel in 2016, then closed in 2017 for a full remodel.

Upon reopening, the shop decided against using the western half of the storefront, which was eventually leased out to Big Fish Sportwear.

Company leadership told The Sentinel a renewed emphasis on the roastery side of the business led to the decision to close. Not long after, Foxtail Coffee announced plans to fill the space. The shop is expected to open in the coming months.

    Galleria at Washington Square

Galleria announced the end of food service in May after the departure of Chef Sacha Ratti.

Sacha and his wife, Pamela, purchased Pereddies at 447 Washington Ave. in 2018 from longtime owners Chris and Pia Brown. A year later, the couple closed the restaurant to renovate and seek investors, at one point listing the business for sale.

Then, in the wake of the pandemic, Sacha and Pamela decided to rethink their concept, opting to expand Galleria (which they'd opened in a neighboring storefront) into the former Pereddies.

The original Galleria location was sold and the couple focused their efforts on fresh bread, artwork, wine tastings, classes and — in time — a regular food menu, refocusing on some of the Italian flavors Pereddies was known for.

Galleria remains open as a gallery and event space.

    Tha Rock’N Roosta

The soul food favorite located in The Shops at Westshore closed its doors with little fanfare earlier this year. The company had been silent on social media for several months, and a posting on the door indicated the eatery had only days to move out.

The restaurant at 12377 James St. (Suite 20) opened in Oct. 2021, offering wings, tenders, spaghetti, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, onion rings, mason jar desserts and specialty beverages.

    Jackie’s Place Restaurant (Maybe?)

The future of Jackie’s Place is unclear, but owners at both Jackie's and DeBoer Bakkerij have confirmed the latter purchased the popular breakfast spot this summer. Both businesses have remained tight-lipped about if and when the restaurant will close, though customers report being told the end of July.

Jackie's specializes in affordable, home-cooked meals.

The Mermaid Bar and Grill and Baldy’s Smoked Meats

Two eateries in downtown Saugatuck, The Mermaid Bar and Grill and Baldy’s Smoked Meats, are up for sale. The restaurants are located in the same building at 340 Water St. and were both owned by the same parent company as Playa Tacos and Tequila.

The businesses closed for the winter season with the intention of reopening this spring, but both are now listed by Advantage Commercial Real Estate with no plans to reopen.

    Guardian Brewing Company

Five years after opening in Saugatuck’s famous Red Barn, Guardian Brewing Co. officially closed its doors on March 18.

Kim Collins and her partner Kate Bishop made big changes to the historic building, once a community theater, converting it into a restaurant, brewery and event center.

The couple said that "after many long, hard conversations," they decided to relocate to Ohio. That later updated to Bloomington, Indiana, where they planned to open a new brewery.
