HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WTAJ) — A bridge was dedicated on Tuesday to Army Cpl. Clyde E. Walter Jr., who was killed while serving in the Vietnam War.

Walter attended Martinsburg’s Central High School and worked at Pennsylvania Shoe Co. before entering the U.S. Army in September 1969. He was killed in action Oct. 11, 1970, while serving with the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile).

Walter’s family joined Rep. Jim Gregory (R-Blair) in dedicating the bridge, which is on Ski Gap Road in Greenfield Township.

“I’m sure he’s not the only one that deserved something like this, there’s plenty other soldiers out there that was in the Vietnam War, and never came home, but this is our family and we just appreciate everything,” Violet Milby, Clyde’s Sister, said.

The bridge is used by about 1,400 people every day.

“Even when injured himself, Cpl. Walter provided cover for his platoon to get to a safer position as gunfire rained onto them,” Gregory said. “The signs for Cpl. Clyde E. Walter Jr. Memorial Bridge will commemorate his heroics and sacrifice. The ideals upheld by this young man from the Martinsburg area are so aspirational.”
