Winds affect offshore fishing, red snapper season
While much of the last week has been windier than we would like, we’ll put up with some extra summer wind if it brings some rain with it. Before this latest round of rain, much of the Cape Fear area was classified as being in moderate drought and a few areas were a step worse in extreme drought. The numbers aren’t in yet on exactly how much the latest rains helped alleviate our rain shortage, but there’s no doubt it helped. Several folks commented they were glad the downpours held off until after the Fourth of July celebration and that might be okay, but we’re sure glad it didn’t wait any longer.

Watermelons typically prefer dry weather to wet weather, but extreme heat calls for extreme measures. The risk is that the sun’s intense and prolonged heat will give one of summertime’s favorite fruits a sunburn. “This year, we have actually gone through […] The post Sweet but hard season for watermelon growers first appeared on Restoration NewsMedia.

VinFast Hits The Brakes On American Invasion
Vietnamese automaker VinFast has confirmed what we suspected: its American assault has hit a bump in the road and production at its North Carolina plant has been delayed even further. The company announced the news in a press release, citing economic challenges, macroeconomic uncertainties, and a shift in the global EV landscape as the reasons for its latest delay. This plant was promised to grow jobs in the region, and VinFast was granted some $1.2 billion in state and county incentives to make its dream of producing EVs on US soil possible. However, the plant, first announced in March 2022, is now only "expected to begin production in 2028."
North Carolina approves party seeking to put RFK Jr. on the ballot, rejects effort for Cornel West
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s election board voted Tuesday to certify a political party that wants to put Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on the state’s presidential ballot this fall. The panel rejected a similar petition effort by a group backing Cornel West, citing questions about how signatures were collected. After weeks of reviewing the signature drives, the board voted 4-1 to recognize the We The People party that supporters of Kennedy, an author and environmental lawyer, are using as a vehicle for him to run in a handful of states. The election board decision means the party can place Kennedy on statewide ballots. But the board’s Democratic majority voted 3-2 along party lines to block the Justice for All Party of North Carolina from ballots. That group supports West, a professor and progressive activist. Board staff said We The People and Justice for All each collected enough valid signatures from registered and qualified voters. The 13,865 required are a small fraction of those needed to run as an independent candidate in North Carolina, which Kennedy initially attempted.
