MEGGETT, SC Lowcountry Leadership Charter School (LLCS) administrators Julianne Lang and Sarah Vann recently participated in an immersive professional development trip to London as a member of the Institute Leadership Cohort, a professional development group hosted by the Charter Institute at Erskine.

During the trip, the cohort visited some of London’s top-performing charter schools and visited with headmasters, students, and other educators. They also had the opportunity to learn more about the governance and policy surrounding charter schools in a meeting with members of Parliament, including MPs Ian Paisley, Dame Andrea Jenkyns, and Baroness Nicky Morgan. The purpose of the trip was to promote professional development, increase educator and student collaboration, and foster innovation in teaching.

“Embarking on an international journey to London, fueled by curiosity and passion for education, was an unforgettable experience,” said Lang, school leader at LLCS. “Visiting three diverse international schools and engaging with Parliament ignited my enthusiasm for innovative leadership in education. Thanks to the impeccable coordination by the Charter Institute at Erskine’s Leadership Program, this trip wasn’t just an excursion, it was a profound opportunity for professional growth and networking. Every interaction, every moment spent exploring new perspectives, has enriched my understanding of leadership in education. These memories are not just souvenirs, they are invaluable treasures that will shape my approach to leadership for a lifetime.” Read more about Ms. Lang’s trip in her blog post here.

This international trip is a component of the Institute’s Leadership Program, which is comprised of Institute school leaders, assistant principals and administrators, and aspiring school leaders. Lang and Vann are both members of the inaugural cohort which was created in 2023. In addition to the international trip, the program has also consisted of professional development sessions, team-building opportunities, and a school visit trip to Miami, FL.

“Participating in the School Leaders Cohort has broadened my perspective and opened my mind in terms of the way I think about school leadership and development,” said Vann, Assistant Principal at LLCS. “The Miami and London school visits presented me with the unique opportunity to objectively observe diversified schools and consult with fellow school leaders about their practices and systems. From this experience I have learned that as charter-school leaders, we cannot allow perceived limitations to stifle our creative visions or solutions.”

The Profile of the South Carolina Graduate was developed by the South Carolina Department of Education and approved by the South Carolina General Assembly. It requires South Carolina’s students to graduate with world-class knowledge and world-class skills.

No federal or state funds were used to fund the travel and lodging of the South Carolina delegation to London. All funds used for participant travel costs were paid for by private sponsorships. The Charter Institute at Erskine is grateful for the financial support offered by the sponsors of the trip.

The Charter Institute at Erskine is the fastest-growing school district in South Carolina.
