Boyz to Men conference hosted in Hollywood, aims to encourage younger generation

HOLLYWOOD, S.C. (WCBD)- The Boyz to Men organization held its annual conference today.

The organization exists to invest in the younger generation, and dozens of young men were at Baptist Hill High School today to learn from mentors across the state.

Organizer Butch Kennedy says the conference is open to ages 9 and up, “I’m excited because its for people like this young man here. It’s for the boys coming to be here from all over our state,” Kennedy said.

There are different vendors and speakers throughout the day, talking on different subjects but all having to do with growing into men.

“I’m excited for the people to talk on stage and to see my friends,” Attendee, Kingston Kelly said.

One of the speakers this year is Kelvin Waits, who just published a book called Favored, “This book is to give not entirely just for young people, but for people in general, hope.”

Waits says it’s an honor for him to be able to speak in front of young men, and hopefully, inspire them to have perseverance in life.

“I want them to know that it doesn’t matter how they started. A lot of times they were born into circumstances, born into situations, but I want them to know through hope and through favor, because I do believe god wants us to win, that they can turn things around,” Waits said.

Organizers say they desire for every boy who attends to walk away with more confidence as they become men…

“It’s really important for our young kids because they don’t get this very often, especially our young boys. They don’t get to see young men who are successful and who are coming back in their community to pour into them,” Kennedy said.
