A United Kingdom woman claimed her daughter’s passport was initially denied because she was named after a “Game of Thrones” character.

Lucy, 39, a resident of Swindon, Wiltshire, revealed that the passport office rejected her six-year-old daughter Khaleesi’s passport application due to a trademark issue. She mentioned that the family was getting ready for a trip to Disneyland Paris and was shocked to receive a rejection letter stating that she needed a letter from Warner Bros. confirming that Khaleesi could use the name. “I didn’t understand and felt frustrated. If she could get a birth certificate, would something not have been flagged up then? I never thought you could trademark a name,” she continued.

The Passport Office apologized to Lucy, acknowledging that a mistake had been made. An official explained that they had wrongly assumed the guidelines regarding trademarked names only applied to individuals who wanted to change their birth names. According to the BBC , Lucy feels that her issue was resolved because the story gained widespread attention online. She mentioned that other individuals who have encountered a similar situation have reached out to her.

Lucy and Khaleesi are still waiting for their passports to arrive. They want to travel to Disneyland Paris but have delayed booking the trip until everything is secured. Lucy also believes that sharing her story could help others who are dealing with the same issue.

I think there might be other people in this situation, that they may have had their passports declined recently because of something like this. Hopefully, they now know it can be resolved,”

The name Khaleesi experienced a significant surge in popularity following the global phenomenon of HBO’s Game of Thrones. As the title given to Daenerys Targaryen, the show’s iconic female protagonist, Khaleesi, became synonymous with strength, independence, and leadership. While it peaked in popularity around 2018, the name continues to be a somewhat unique choice, reflecting the enduring impact of the series on pop culture and baby naming trends.
