A former McDonald’s worker has been sentenced to serve five years in federal prison for setting a dumpster on fire because he was overwhelmed by the crowd during his shift.

In April 2023, Joshua McGregor,34, was working a regular shift at a local McDonald’s in Savannah, Georgia, when he became frustrated with the intense crowding and decided to step outside. According to FOX News , he ignited a piece of cardboard and threw it into a dumpster outside the restaurant, which was already full of cardboard and other flammable materials. He assumed the fire was well contained before returning to work.

McGregor was also in the process of becoming manager, so he filmed the fire on his cellphone and then uploaded the footage to social media. The fire became uncontrollable, leading customers in the drive-thru lane to reverse out of the parking lot. The restaurant also closed temporarily while the Savannah Fire Department extinguished the flames.

Savannah Police arrested him and pleaded guilty to arson in U.S. District Court in May. In addition to his sentencing, McGregor was ordered to pay restitution for the property lost in the fire and to serve three years of supervised release upon completing his sentence.

“Savannah Fire’s Arson Unit greatly appreciates our continued ability to work with our local and federal partners to successfully prosecute arson that affects interstate commerce in our jurisdiction. These efforts have greatly reduced the act of arson throughout the city,” said Fred Anderson, chief investigator for the Savannah Fire Unit.
