As we previously shared, on Saturday (August 10), the Court of Arbitration for Sport voided an on-floor appeal by Jordan Chiles’ coach that vaulted her to third. The group claimed that the appeal arrived four seconds beyond the one-minute time limit for scoring inquiries.

It was then learned that Jordan Chiles had been ordered to return her Bronze medal won on August 5 during the floor all-around completion at the Paris Olympics. After the decision, the International Gymnastics Federation restored Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu .

In a joint statement, the USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) said, “We are devastated by the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling regarding women’s floor exercise. The inquiry into the Difficulty Value of Jordan Chiles’ floor exercise routine was filed in good faith and, we believed, in accordance with FIG rules to ensure accurate scoring.”

The Olympic committee’s statement regarding Jordan Chiles continued, “Throughout the appeal process, Jordan has been subject to consistent, utterly baseless, and extremely hurtful attacks on social media. No athlete should be subject to such treatment. We condemn the attacks and those who engage, support, or instigate them. We commend Jordan for conducting herself with integrity both on and off the competition floor, and we continue to stand by and support her.”

On Sunday (August 11), the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said that it would “reallocate” the Bronze medal to Barbosu , who finished in fourth place. The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee also released another statement and said, “We firmly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal, and there were critical errors in both the initial scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent CAS appeal process that need to be addressed.”

The IOC also stated that they would be reaching out to the USOPC regarding the return of Chiles’ Bronze and would be working with the Romanian Olympic Committee to discuss a reallocation ceremony honoring Barbosu. The USOPC said, “The initial error occurred in the scoring by FIG, and the second error was during the CAS appeal process, where the USOPC was not given adequate time or notice to effectively challenge the decision.” While it is clear what the exact process is for the appeal, it is reported that the appeal would take place either in Switzerland’s highest court, the Swiss Tribunal, or the European Court of Human Rights.
