A mother’s worst nightmare became a tragic reality this week following a serious accident in Sarasota, Florida. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a child was run over by her own parent during her first day of school.

The incident occurred on Monday morning as the mother was dropping off her daughter. The district superintendent reported that the girl bent down to pick something up, and when she did, her mother inadvertently hit her with the SUV. Unaware that her daughter had crawled under the vehicle to retrieve the items, the mother pulled forward, running over the pre-teen. The girl was critically injured and airlifted to All Children’s Hospital.

FHP spokesperson Kenneth Watson emphasized the importance of paying attention while driving and especially to your kid. “This incident was not caused by the speed of the vehicle, but rather by someone in a rush making an assumption. We hope this child will survive,” said Trooper Watson.

Watson also noted, “Here we are on day one, and we’ve already had a tragedy. We hope this does not happen again, but it’s crucial to maintain good spatial awareness around school zones, especially when letting your child out of the vehicle.”

A spokesperson for Sarasota County Schools added to PEOPLE, “The school district encourages all families to follow safety protocols and use designated student pickup and drop-off areas on school campuses.”

As of now, FHP is still investigating the case, and it remains unclear whether any charges will be filed.
