Sad news in the animal world. Sphen the gentoo penguin who is one half of a world-famous same-sex “power couple” – has passed away in Sydney, Australia at the age of 11.

The Sydney Sea Life Aquarium announced his passing on Thursday, noting that Sphen lived a long and fulfilling life for a Gentoo penguin, who typically has a lifespan of around 13 years in captivity. Sphen was known for his deep bond with his partner, Magic. Their world-famous same-sex pairing became a symbol of love and acceptance, celebrated in schools and inspiring a pride parade float that highlighted their unique story.

In the wake of Sphen’s death, Magic, now eight years old, has been mourning the loss of his partner, NBC News notes. To help him process this grief, caregivers took Magic to Sphen’s body, allowing him to understand that his beloved companion would not return, as shared by general manager Richard Dilly, also a caregiver at the aquarium. “He immediately started singing, which was beautifully reciprocated by the colony,” Dilly added in a statement.

“The loss of Sphen is heartbreaking to the penguin colony, the team and everyone who has been inspired or positively impacted by Sphen and Magic’s story.”

The public affectionately nicknamed Lara “Sphengic” as a tribute to her parents, further solidifying the duo’s legacy within the community.

How Can Anyone Tell If An Animal Is Gay!?

People can identify same-sex behaviors in animals by observing interactions such as mating, grooming, and social bonding between individuals of the same sex. These behaviors may manifest in various forms, including mounting, cuddling, or forming strong alliances, and can be seen across many species, including mammals and birds.

Researchers study these interactions in natural settings to understand their purpose, which could range from establishing social hierarchies to strengthening bonds.

The love story of Sphen and Magic transcended mere fame; it became a powerful narrative that challenged societal norms and showcased the importance of diversity and acceptance.
