The West Indian Day Parade in Brooklyn, which typically celebrates culture and community, ended in tragedy for one group on Monday. According to a police report, the event went off without incident until it was disrupted by gunfire.

The NYPD confirmed that one person was killed and four others were injured during the shooting. The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Denzel Chan, who sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen around 2:35 p.m. along the parade route. Initially listed in critical condition, Chan’s condition later stabilized; however, he tragically succumbed to complications, as reported by law enforcement officials.

Authorities revealed that the unidentified shooter allegedly climbed onto a cement divider situated between the service road and the parade route before opening fire on a group of individuals. In addition to Chan, four other victims were reported: a 69-year-old woman who was struck in the shoulder, a 64-year-old man who was hit in the arm, a 36-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to the head, and a 16-year-old who was injured in the arm.

NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell emphasized the intentional nature of the attack, stating, “This was not random. This was an intentional act by one person towards a group of people.”

In response to the incident, police are actively searching for the suspect involved in the shooting. Descriptions from witnesses indicate that the perpetrator is a man in his 20s with a slim build. At the time of the incident, he was last seen wearing a brown shirt with paint stains and a black bandanna.

The NYPD is now urging anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward and assist in the investigation.
