Just two days after the mass shooting at Georgia’s Apalachee High School, with a 14-year-old suspect, another shooting has taken place at Maryland’s Joppatowne High School — where a 16-year-old student, now arrested, fatally shot his 15-year-old classmate in the men’s bathroom, with a single gunshot.

The school — which is about 20 miles northeast of Baltimore — just began its 2024-2025 school year four days ago. According to CBS Baltimore’s WJZ News , one student is dead and another is in police custody after a shooting on Friday (September 6).

Maryland’s Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler reported that a 16-year-old high school student has been arrested after allegedly shooting a 15-year-old classmate during a fight inside a men’s bathroom just after 12:30 p.m. The victim was airlifted by a medical helicopter to the hospital and listed in serious condition before later dying. The victim has been identified as Warren Curtis Grant , of Edgewood.

The alleged teenage gunman — who was “not unknown to police” — fled the school after the incident but was eventually captured moments later. He will be charged as an adult. Speaking on the tragic incident, Harford County Schools Superintendent Dr. Sean Bulson stated, “Our hearts are breaking for the victim and the victim’s family. This should not be happening in schools.”

Additionally, Sheriff Gahler added, “Sadly we stand here today to discuss another school shooting. A tragic day four days into the school year.” Gahler noted that the emergency response to the Joppatowne High School shooting was “swift and massive,” adding, “Within 15 minutes, more than 100 police officers were here from all of our partner agencies.”

Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler also shared that there was a school resource officer stationed inside the school at the time of the incident, however, they did not hear the gunshot. When the school officials did learn of the incident, the officer, the principal, and the school nurse quickly responded to the scene of the shooting.

Soon after, the school was evacuated and parents of students at the campus were instructed to pick up their children at a nearby church (Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church), which quickly became a reunification center. According to Harford County Schools Superintendent Dr. Sean Bulson, school officials have not yet determined when the school will reopen, however, counseling for students will be made available.
