In July, Tory Lanez, real name Daystar Peterson, announced that he would be starting a new music series called ‘ Prison Tapes ,’ which would include him dropping a few songs a week that he had in the stash before being convicted in the 2020 shooting of Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion . The rapper is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence after being found guilty of three felonies: assault with a semiautomatic firearm; having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle; and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

In a recorded prison phone call posted to his Instagram on July 24, the rapper stated, “After about 20-something to 30-something f**k-ups and mistakes, me and my engineer have finally figure out how to record music over the jail phone and still keep the quality as professional as I had it on the street. It’s over. I done cracked the f***ing code, man. This means that not even these prison walls can stop me from dropping new music. It’s crazy!”

He continued, “That being said, I’m about to start dropping hot heaps of coal on y’all head top. I’m dropping the all new ‘Free Tory’ playlist – it’s gon’ be updated every week with new music that I’m recording from prison in real time. This is the first of its kind and although God has already shown me that this moment is only temporary, it speaks testimony to the fact that no matter where they put me they can’t lock down my spirit, my ambition, my soul my passion nor my destiny!”

On July 25, Lanez dropped two new tracks called “Cell 245” and “Wish I Never Met You.” The first track began with an automated message from a prison phone call and found the Toronto rapper reflecting on past troubles and the consequences of his garnered success. He rapped, “Shootouts gave me PTSD, that’s the damage that it did / I’m talking hammers at the crib, I’m talking hammers at my grandma’s house / She in the kitchen cooking, finding hammers in the counters, real steppa.”

The second track, which began with the same prison call audio recording, showed Lanez in a softer and more vulnerable light. On the track, he sang about getting entangled in a toxic relationship. On the hook, he rapped, “I can’t lie, I just wish I’d never met you in the first place / Damn, why you had to come and kiss me in the first place? / Damn, why we had to even mix it in the first place? / Damn, then wе went ahead and slid into third base / And I wish I’d nеver ever met you in the first place.” Aside from the lyrics catching fans’ attention, the production and sound quality also garnered hundreds of comments.

Since dropping his first set of new tracks in his weekly ‘ Prison Tapes ’ series, Tory Lanez has now been forced to shut down operations after California Correctional Institution prison guards confiscated all of his studio equipment. On Monday (September 9), TMZ reported that guards raided his cell block and took every last piece of equipment. For the past few weeks, he’s been dropping songs, like those mentioned above, plus songs like “Basement” and “Appellate Court.”

The tracks labeled under the ‘ Prison Tapes ’ umbrella have been benefiting his record sales, but he’s since been forbidden to continue operations. Ceasar McDowell , CEO of Unite the People and chief deputy on Tory Lanez’s legal team, told TMZ that prison officials told the rapper’s team that inmates are strictly forbidden from having recording devices for various reasons. The rapper and his legal team are currently waiting to learn if he will face any further consequences for the violation.

The problem I have with this case is that no one has heard his side of what happened that night. Just speculation, and so called phone recordings. Correct me if I'm wrong.
