Mathew Knowles Believes Race Has A Role In 2024 CMA Awards Failing To Nominate Beyoncé And ‘Cowboy Carter’ — ‘It’s A White And Black Thing’

Oop! Beyoncé ’s daddy Mathew Knowles is coming to his baby girl’s defense and telling TMZ that race has a huge role in the 2024 Country Music Association Awards (CMAs) failing to nominate Queen Bey and her recent album Country-esque ‘ Cowboy Carter .’

Although Bey insisted that her album wasn’t a “Country album,” but rather a “Beyoncé album,” fans were still shocked to see that when the CMAs announced their nominations for the 2024 ceremony, Bey was nowhere to be found on the list.

Beyoncé’s absence from the roster of nominees struck a chord with the Beyhive worldwide — starting right at home with her father! Speaking with TMZ, Mathew Knowles said he’s not surprised to learn that his daughter Beyoncé received zero CMA nominations for her ‘ Cowboy Carter ’ album — mostly, given her history with the awards show.

He continued to explain that race is most likely a factor in this situation. Mr. Knowles also went on to mention the biggest elephant in the room which is Beyoncé’s not-so-good experience performing with The Dixie Chicks , now known as The Chicks , during the 2016 CMA Awards. Her inclusion in the group’s performance did not go over so well with the crowd and higher-ups. Mr. Knowles also said the CMAs never even apologized to Beyoncé following the performance and backlash.

Despite the incident and being forced into a box, Beyoncé used the situation as motivation and dropped one of the biggest Country albums of the year. When Bey announced her new album on March 19, she said in an Instagram post , “Today marks the 10-day countdown until the release of act ii. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of the supporters of TEXAS HOLD ‘EM and 16 CARRIAGES.”

She added, “I feel honored to be the first Black woman with the number one single on the Hot Country Songs chart. That would not have happened without the outpouring of support from each and every one of you. My hope is that years from now, the mention of an artist’s race, as it relates to releasing genres of music, will be irrelevant.”

She continued, “This album has been over five years in the making. It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t. But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive. It feels good to see how music can unite so many people around the world, while also amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated so much of their lives educating on our musical history.”

Beyoncé recalled, “The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me. act ii is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work … This ain’t a Country album. This is a “Beyoncé” album. This is act ii COWBOY CARTER, and I am proud to share it with y’all!”

However, Mr. Knowles claimed the voters at the CMAs are “showing it still comes down to White and Black.” He said, “There’s more White people in America and unfortunately they don’t vote based on ability and achievements, it’s still sometimes a white and Black thing.” To be clear, Beyoncé’s father did not call the CMA voters racist, outright, but he did stand firm on them having snubbed her, claiming that alone “speaks for itself.”

Mr. Knowles’ concern for his daughter regarding the CMAs is that the organization is taking a negative position, but again, he doesn’t find it surprising as it’s happening within “the current state of American culture.” He added, “In America, there’s no accountability for people not being accepting of other cultures.” Elsewhere, Country artist Shaboozey , who is featured on Bey’s ‘ Cowboy Carter ’ album, is nominated for Best New Artist and Single of the Year with his Smash hit “A Bar Song.”
