On Thursday morning, residents of Southern California experienced a notable seismic event as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake jolted the region. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that this tremor occurred near Malibu, California, around 7:30 a.m. PT.

Initially, the earthquake was estimated at a magnitude of 5.1, but after further analysis, it was confirmed to be a 4.7. Just two minutes following the initial quake, an aftershock measuring 2.8 in magnitude was recorded in the same vicinity.

The tremors were felt for several seconds and resonated throughout various parts of Los Angeles, reaching as far south as Temecula. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or substantial damage resulting from the quake. As is often the case with such events, social media users have taken to X to share their reactions.

Paris Hilton tweeted, “That #Earthquake was scary.” Another X user said, “I like how the #earthquake alert tells you to “drop, cover, hold on and protect yourself” as though 96% of the time spent during an earthquake isn’t just you realizing there’s an earthquake while the other 4% of the time is just you realizing the earthquake is over.” A third said, “An earthquake at 7:30AM. Quit playing, Los Angeles.”

California experiences thousands of earthquakes each year, primarily due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and the presence of the San Andreas Fault. In general, the state records around 10,000 earthquakes annually, although most of these are too small to be felt by residents.

LA Mayor released a statement saying, “A preliminary magnitude 5.1 earthquake near Malibu shook the Los Angeles area this morning. Our @LAFD has activated to conduct its routine survey of the city to assess for any damages. City teams will continue to monitor.”
