2024 VMAs Shatters Ratings Records: Biggest Audience in Years

MTV’s broadcast of the 2024 Video Music Awards significantly boosted viewer engagement, with combined ratings for the premiere and encore presentations increasing by 8 percent over the previous year. The show drew an audience of 4.09 million compared to 3.78 million.

According to a report by Billboard, this year’s broadcast was simultaneously aired across 13 networks, including BET, CMT, Comedy Central, and others, matching the number from last year. The widespread availability likely contributed to higher visibility and interest among casual viewers. The 2024 VMAs was also declared the most socially interactive entertainment telecast in history, amassing 66.7 million interactions. It only trailed behind the second presidential debate of the 2024 campaign season featuring VP Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

The event garnered 829 million video views and 76.3 million engagements across MTV’s global platforms, which is an increase of 18% and 25% respectively compared to the previous year. The VMAs trended globally at the top on X (formerly Twitter) for ten hours, and media impressions increased by 8% to 107.5 billion this year.

This year’s lineup featured performances by host Megan Thee Stallion, Sabrina Carpenter, Lenny Kravist, Chappelle Roan, and Benson Boone among others. Taylor Swift was in attendance at the event and won most of the awards but did not perform. Additionally, Katy Perry performed a medley of her greatest hits before accepting the Video Vanguard Award.
