The trial for the men charged in connection with the murder of Memphis rapper Young Dolph commenced this Monday morning, nearly three years after his tragic death.

As we previously reported, Young Dolph was fatally shot near a well-known bakery in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 36. The four suspects in the case include suspected shooters Justin Johnson and Cornelius Smith, alleged mastermind Hernandez Govan, and Jermarcus Johnson, the half-brother of the alleged shooters.

Justin Johnson, also known as “Straight Drop,” was the first defendant to appear before the judge. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges, including first-degree murder. During the opening statement, Shelby County Assistant District Attorney Paul Hagerman alleged that Big Jook, the brother of prominent Memphis rapper Yo Gotti, placed a “hit” on Young Dolph, offering $100,000 to whoever killed him. This animosity stems from a long-standing feud with CMG, the record label associated with Gotti. Hagerman argued that Johnson was motivated to become the label’s next big artist and intended to use part of the $100,000 to advance his career, as reported by Jeremy Pierre of Fox News from the courtroom.

The assistant district attorney further claimed that Johnson drove the white Mercedes to Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies on the day of the shooting and was the individual wielding a handgun during the incident.

As the trial progresses, family members are expected to testify, reliving the tragic events. Before the trial, the family released a statement over the weekend, expressing their feelings about the proceedings.

“We remain heartbroken over the loss of Adolph, and we have faith that the legal system will bring justice to all of those involved in this crime. This has been an unimaginable time for our family, but the love and support of the community has given us strength as we continue to process this situation. We ask for privacy as the legal process unfolds, and for patience from those who stand with us. We trust that the legal system will deliver justice for Adolph, allowing us, and the community he loved, to begin the journey toward healing.”
