The incident occurred around 8:48 a.m., while Nathaniel McGuire,20, reportedly rushed through the courthouse doors and tossed a small bag past the weapons screening station. The bag exploded near the local arraignment room, and the blast left five people with non-life-threatening injuries, including burns, ABC News reported. Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Craig Bonner also confirmed in a statement that all the victims were civilians, and no court employees were harmed.

McGuire reportedly wore body armor under his jacket and was apprehended as he attempted to reach his car outside the courthouse. Authorities found weapons and ammunition in his vehicle, said Court Executive Officer Darrel Parker. He faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, using an explosive device, and possession of explosives. He is being held without bail, and his alleged motive is believed to be connected to his recent arrest by the sheriff’s office in July.

During the arrest, deputies also seized a loaded and concealed revolver that was not registered to McGuire.McGuire was scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday morning at the time of the explosion. Court records indicate he was facing a charge of carrying a loaded firearm. An attorney for McGuire has not been listed in connection with that case.

Authorities are investigating whether McGuire is linked to several recent arson fires in the area. The FBI is also involved in the investigation, although officials stated that he has no known ties to terrorism.
