The Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office stated on Monday that investigators believe the case is an apparent murder-suicide, and Robertson is suspected of being the shooter. Still, no details regarding a motive have been released at this time. According to PEOPLE , Ardoin and Robertson were traveling to Mamou when they were found around 7 p.m. Authorities speculated that they may have been en route to attend homecoming festivities at Mamou High School, where Ardoin was a student.

Mamou High School posted an online tribute honoring Ardoin as a beloved student: “ Lord, we pray for peace, strength, and understanding as we return to school tomorrow without one of our own. Please keep our students and staff, as well as the family and friends of Dashayla, in your prayers. Dashayla will always be remembered for her courage and bravery, her kind heart, and her beautiful smile. She was so very loved and will be dearly missed.” Roberston, known as a local DJ, had shared moments from his relationship with Ardoin on social media. In an Instagram post from two months prior, he had posted a photo of them with the caption, “Me & You Against The World.”

A witness explained to local outlet KLFY that the couple pulled up in a truck before they heard gunshots.

“It wasn’t a truck that I normally seen, but it didn’t look out of place either. They pulled up and I heard a couple of gunshots, didn’t really think anything of it. I don’t want to tell you what I saw. It wasn’t good.”

A loved one wrote on Facebook that the high school senior recently beat cancer and alluded to issues in the couple’s relationship.

The investigation is ongoing, and the local community is mourning the tragic loss.
