Disease is 'taking over' Missouri apple orchards after years of climate pressure
On a sunny June morning at Hickory Ridge Orchard a few miles southeast of Mexico, Missouri, Brandt Schisler walked down a row of apple trees, picking fruits that had succumbed to a variety of diseases. He checked them to see how infected they were and threw them on the ground to help save the rest of the tree.
Jury convicts Ashland man of manslaughter
A Boone County jury convicted an Ashland man Thursday afternoon of manslaughter in the stabbing death of his co-worker. 22-year-old Robin Morales-Sanchez was found guilty in the death of 47-year-old Moises Hernandez-Sanchez at an Ashland home in 2021. Both were employees at Jose Jalapeno’s restaurant in Ashland. Defense attorney’s argued self defense. Sentencing was set for Aug. 10.

Boone County Fire Protection coping with loss two weeks after assistant chief’s death
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ) Today marks two weeks after Assistant Fire Chief Matt Tobben died during a water rescue in northern Columbia. The Columbia Fire Department responded to a call around 4:30 a.m. July 8 at Range Line Street and Bear Creek and Boone County Fire was dispatched for mutual aid. Two people, Paige Pace, 29, and Charlie Resonno, 38, both of Columbia, were swept away by floodwaters and hanging onto trees. Boone County sent a boat with Tobben and Columbia firefighter Derek Abbott, 36, of Fulton, to rescue them. The boat lost power, became "swamped with water," and overturned. Pace, Resonno, and Abbott were rescued, but Tobben never resurfaced.
Columbia man accused of fatally strangling girlfriend last Christmas is now facing third charge
A Columbia man accused of murdering his girlfriend last Christmas is now facing an additional charge. Jeffrey Skaggs, 39, was initially charged with second-degree murder and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child. But a superseding indictment was filed last Friday which included an additional charge of first-degree domestic assault.

Largest trial court in the US closes after ransomware attack, California officials say
LOS ANGELES (AP) — California officials say the largest trial court in the country is closed after a ransomware attack shut down its computer system late last week. Officials with the Superior Court of Los Angeles County say the court disabled its computer network upon discovery of the cybersecurity attack early Friday. The system remained down through the weekend. Officials said all 36 courthouse locations in the county were closed Monday. They say a preliminary investigation shows no evidence that users’ data was compromised. The Superior Court of Los Angeles County is the largest unified superior court in the United States.

Fire damages artist’s studio
A fire early Sunday morning damaged an artist’s studio and artwork in the North Village Arts District in downtown Columbia. Firefighters were dispatched about 2 a.m. to the Orr Street Studios. They found a small fire outside of the building had extended into the structure. There were no injuries reported. The cause is under investigation.
