HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A basement fire in Holyoke is serving as a reminder to residents to not overload power strips.

According to the Holyoke Fire Department, crews were called to 6 Tokeneke Road at 10:00 a.m. on Friday for a reported basement fire. Crews reported heavy smoke coming from the basement, and crews were able to put it out quickly.

All residents were out of the house when crews arrived, and no injuries were reported. The occupants have been left without a home and are being assisted by the Red Cross. The fire started due to an overloaded electrical outlet with multiple power strips plugged in.

A typical power strip can handle up to 1,800W of power, according to Entergy Newsroom . Anything more than that can overload it, potentially causing it to overheat and create a fire hazard.

To keep your home and family safe, follow these safety tips:

    • Make sure any power strip you use is UL-certified for safe operation.
    • Never plug a power strip into another power strip. Doing so violates most safety codes and can quickly overload a circuit.
    • Avoid using power strips in areas where they could potentially get wet, such as in kitchens, bathrooms, and basements.
    • Power strips are for indoor use only, unless specifically designed for outdoor use.
    • Don’t put electrical cords underneath rugs or pinched behind furniture.
    • Consider installing tamper-resistant (TR) outlets in homes with small children.
