HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Nationwide, one in five homicide victims is killed by a long-term intimate partner and 60 percent of children are witnesses to some sort of domestic abuse.

Following a number of domestic violence incidents that ended with homicide investigations local players said ‘enough is enough’. The Sheriff’s Department will be calling attention to those troubling statistics with several events and wants to highlight the programs available at the YWCA for victims of domestic violence and their children, including their 24-7 hotline.

One of those local victims this year was a member of the Sheriff’s Department bringing those statistics to life for her peers and the sheriff.

“I think this happened with the opioid crisis. Until it really started to hit suburbia America everyone cast shadows at the people that were affected. You’d think we would learn our lesson. It’s a shame that it takes something to hit home to refocus and get off the sidelines to get off the sidelines and be a main player,” Sheriff Cocchi said.

The Sheriff Shuffle 5k is scheduled for September 29th in Holyoke. To register or make a donation visit runsignup.com , all proceeds will benefit the program at the YWCA.
