SOMERVILLE – An off-duty Edison Township police officer has been sentenced to 15 years in state prison on two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide in a drunken crash that killed his two passengers on Route 27 in Franklin in August 2023 .

Amitoj Oberoi, 31, of Franklin, was sentenced Wednesday by Somerset County Superior Court Judge Jonathan Romankow to two concurrent terms of 15 years in the crash which resulted in the deaths of Carlos Perez-Gaytan, 24, of Franklin, and Victor Cabrera-Francisco, 20, of North Brunswick, who were passengers in the vehicle driven by Oberoi. Oberoi must also serve 85% of the sentence before becoming eligible for parole. According to Somerset County Prosecutor John McDonald, Oberoi was driving a 2007 Audi Q7 southbound on Somerset Street (Route 27) at a high rate of speed and lost control of the vehicle causing the Audi to leave the roadway striking several trees, lamp posts and a utility pole upon coming to rest. The crash happened at about 6:22 a.m. Aug. 27, 2023.

A passenger on the right side of the rear seat, Perez-Gaytan, was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger on the left side of the rear seat, Cabrera-Francisco, was trapped in the car and required extrication. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A front seat passenger, a 29-year-old Highland Park man, sustained minor injuries and refused medical attention.

Oberoi was taken to an area trauma center treatment of his injuries.

Oberoi was suspended from the Edison Police Department pending the outcome of the case.
