LINDEN - Work has begun to transform a landmark commercial corner in the city's downtown into a seven-story, 569,000-square-foot building with more than 300 apartments.

Last week Mayor Derek Armstead and other officials participated in the groundbreaking of the $120 million OneWest Apartments redevelopment project on the corner of North Wood and West Elizabeth avenues. The project is slated to be completed in the spring of 2026.

The project calls for 334 apartments, including one-bedroom, one-bedroom with a den and two-bedroom units, along with 13,000-square-feet of ground floor retail space and a 30,000-square-foot amenity space on the third floor.

OneWest Apartments is within walking distance of the Linden Train Station.

The 1.86-acre property operated for years as the Elwood Plaza retail center.

Once known as the "Clarke Property" it housed a QuickChek, Linden Retail Specialty Pharmacy, Carvel, Big Blues Sub and other businesses. The property was owned by the Clarke family for nearly 100 years and was developed by Fred Wood. Wood Avenue in Linden is named after Fred Wood.

“Housing is a critical goal for Linden. I am excited to have my colleagues’ support from City Council withour shared vision for this major redevelopment project," Armstead said.

He added that the building will have a built-in-swimming pool, an outdoor pavilion, BBQ and fire pit areas, recreational spaces, a dedicated dog walking area, indoor fitness rooms and a business center.
