The Plainfield High School football program took a big leap forward last year, as the deep, talented team posted its first winning season and first trip to the playoffs in 18 years. That talent and depth also includes a ton of versatility, and junior Kamai Lowery is the perfect example.

After sharing signal-calling duties with Ala-Meen Watkins last year, while the duo also had an impact elsewhere in the offense and on the other side of the ball, Lowery took over fulltime quarterbacking duties in the second game of this season and taken his game to a new level, leading the Cardinals to two wins in their last three outings.

The junior quarterback completed 8-of-17 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns last weekend, and added another score on a 12-yard run, as Plainfield (2-2) blanked Perth Amboy 41-0.

He is the MyCentralJersey.com Reader’s Choice Football Player of the Week.

For the season, Lowery is 29-for-55 for 506 yards and six touchdowns and no interceptions, adding two more TDs on the ground.

“He’s really matured as a leader,” said interim head coach Al-Magid Hutchins. “He’s intentional, in terms of his preparation and when he’s out there with his teammates. He’s making very good decisions with the ball and throwing it about as well as any other quarterback in the state. He just made the personal decision that he’s going to be locked in, and he’s playing really good football right now.”
