PISCATAWAY – The religious corporation of the largest Greek congregation in New Jersey is looking to subdivide some of its township property for residential development.

Greek Orthodox Community of New Brunswick has applied to the township Planning Board for preliminary major subdivision and bulk variance approval for its property at 57 Riverview Ave., up the street from the St. George Greek Orthodox Church on River Road, according to documents filed with the township.

A hearing on the application is scheduled for the board's Oct. 9 meeting on Zoom.

The property, in a residential zone, is an oversized lot that has a single-family home with a detached garage that the applicant wants to subdivide into four lots, the documents say.

The plan calls for the existing home and garage to remain on one new lot, with future residential development pegged for the other three, the documents say.

Bulk variance approval is sought for the new lot with the existing home for minimum required front yard setback where 40 feet is required and 20 feet is proposed, and minimum required side yard setback for an accessory building where 8 feet is required and 4.4 feet is proposed.

St. George Greek Orthodox Church was founded in 1916 to tend to the spiritual needs of the New Brunswick area’s Greek community. It serves to sustain and perpetuate the Greek culture in New Jersey through its youth programming, Greek language and religion classes, and traditional Greek folk dancing program.

The church celebrates Greek culture by hosting a Greek festival each May where about 15,000 people attend.
