A moose killed a man in Alaska while he was attempting to take pictures of its newborn calves, according to reports.

The man, 70-year-old Dale Chorman of Homer, Alaska, had stopped to take pictures of the calves with a second, unidentified man when the adult moose charged, according to the Associated Press .

"As they were walking through the brush looking for the moose, that's when the cow moose attacked Dale," said Austin McDaniel, a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Public Safety, according to the report.

Chorman was pronounced dead at the scene, and the outlet said there were no witnesses to the death.

Moose are not noted as being particularly violent, often only attacking humans when they feel their young are imperiled or if they are provoked, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game . For example, in Alaska, there are about 10 moose attacks each year.

An adult male moose can weigh up to 1,600 pounds and can be as large as 6 feet tall, making an attack a dangerous proposition for a human.

Most deaths caused by moose each year in the United States spring from vehicle collisions , according to the National Park Service.
