Is Homewood Installing a New Gondola?

    By Quintin Mills,

Homewood Mountain Resort has plans to totally revamp their infrastructure within the next few years, and one of the big projects is installing a new gondola line . The resort has been on the hot seat recently because of their ‘ master plan’ scheme that was originally planned to be a private resort.

Last summer they abandoned the private resort idea because of backlash from the public. At a community meeting in March, Discovery Land Co., one of the companies that owns a stake in Homewood, again faced some resistance from the public on their revised plans.

The community was concerned that the conglomerate is not prioritizing the residents, that the local government is trying to take advantage of the increased property tax that would incur, and they will eventually whittle away at public access, spearheaded by members of Keep Homewood Public .

These are all legitimate concerns as we’ve seen across different areas in the U.S., and there seems to be a complete lack of trust between the community and Discovery Land Co.

However, Homewood is in need of some improvements. The new gondola will be a Doppelmayr D-Line Gondola that will run from the north Lodge to mid-mountain, essentially replacing the Madden Triple lift.

The D-line lifts from Doppelmayr are a relatively new type of lift in the past 10 years, and it just means it’s a high-speed, detachable lift.

The new master plan has a proposal to build a mid-mountain lodge with sprawling views of Lake Tahoe. The gondola is set to rise only 1,000 feet and gives the entire 1,840 foot vertical drop of Homewood accessible by detachable lifts.

The new gondola could be up and running by the upcoming winter.

After looking at some concerned internet users' opinions about the matter, it seems that people are underwhelmed about the amount of ground it will cover. Some suggested that the gondola should go to the top of Homewood, not just the mid-mountain.
