ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – One local high school graduate is working to combat the stigma around epilepsy.

Amer Armbruster, an avid runner and a graduate of Honeoye Falls-Lima High School, tells us he was diagnosed with juvenile absence epilepsy in 2019.

This is his third year organizing a 5k-10k race called ‘Seize the day: Amer’s Epilepsy Trail Run’.

Amer says the proceeds made from his run will go toward the group called ‘Empowering People’s Independence’.

We’re told the organization gives progressive care solutions to those with epilepsy developmental disabilities and brain injuries.

Amer says epilepsy is a condition that goes under the radar most of the time, but he’s working to change that.

“I’ve been a runner for a long time, and I’ve always loved it, and it’s just something super fun. It’s a way I get to interact with my community and it’s a great social outlet so I thought that it would be a good way to incorporate the fundraiser and the race or make it a race just because it combines what I love along with something that we’re trying to do,” Armbruster said.

Amer says more than 140 participants took part in the race. If you want to be a part of his mission, you can visit this website to find out how to support people with epilepsy.
