Wayne Highlands starts Aug. 26 with 13 new teachers, slate of musicals ahead

Correction: A previous version of the story incorrectly listed the administrative change at Lakeside Elementary School.

This school year marks, for the Class of 2025, the 150th graduation at Honesdale High School.

Wayne Highlands School District Superintendent Gregory Frigoletto reported that the 2024-2025 school year also includes 13 new teachers, and announced the district's schedule of musicals open to the community to enjoy.

    Classes resume Aug. 26.

Frigoletto stated that they are not introducing any new curriculum or extra-curricular components for the new school year, but in many areas in the district are maintaining the quality programming they have for their students.

There are, however, numerous fresh faces to greet the students when they return for class. At Lakeside Elementary School, Patrick Blaskiewicz is taking the reins as principal, succeeding Sandra Rickard, who is retiring. Blaskiewicz previously served as assistant principal at the high school.

Donald Cook is the new assistant principal at Honesdale High School. Frigoletto said this is Cook's first administrative role and he is "ready for the challenge," having served many years as a math teacher at the middle school.

Due to recent retirements, 13 new teachers and eight support personnel have been hired, he said.

Frigoletto expressed excitement for the calendar of school musicals. These, as well as athletic events, he noted, not only showcase their students' abilities but provide opportunity for the public, many who may not have a child or grandchild in the district, to engage with the local school district. The musicals planned include:

    • Honesdale High School: “Matilda The Musical.” Feb. 14, 15 and 16.
    • Wayne Highlands Middle School: “Disney’s Finding Nemo JR.”  Nov. 22 and 23.
    • Damascus Area School: “Ebenezer’s Christmas Carol.” Dec. 6 and 7.
    • Preston Area School: “Seussical JR.” Nov. 22 and 23.

This summer, paving occurred at the Preston school, and the middle school gymnasium floor was refurbished.

As they ready for schools to reopen, Frigoletto said they pledge to adhere to their mission summed as "the Wayne Highlands Way." This includes, he said, assuring all they do is student-centered, promoting a culture filled with respect, and knowing they always need to do better for the students and as professionals.
