A surfing legend and professional lifeguard has been killed off the coast of Oahu after he was attacked by a shark.

Tamayo Perry, 49, also had some acting experience and appeared in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Perry was found by a passerby on Mālaekahana Beach on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. He was missing an arm and a leg and paramedics were unable to revive him.

Perry was a local legend who worked as a lifeguard and a surfing instructor, but was also known worldwide in the surfing community. It is believed that he was taking a ‘surf break’ from work when the tragedy occurred, and he did not return.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, referred to Perry’s death as “a tragic loss,” adding that “Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected.”

Perry had been surfing since he was 12 years old, and began his career with the Ocean Safety department in July 2016.
