HONOLULU (KHON2) — A court injunction has put a temporary stop to the removal of the iconic Haiku Stairs, also known as the Stairway to Heaven, amid ongoing legal proceedings.

The city recently received permission to dismantle 60 stair modules from the Moanalua Saddle and up to 15 modules from the windward side of the stairs.

These sections had already been detached prior to the legal challenge that prompted the injunction.

Legal arguments regarding the fate of the Haiku Stairs are set to continue in the weeks ahead as stakeholders on both sides present their cases.

In response to the court’s decision, Honolulu officials have announced that the Honolulu Watershed Forest Reserve and Moanalua Valley Neighborhood Park, where the stairs are located, will remain closed to the public.

Trespassers accessing the restricted area will continue to face fines and possible arrest, according to city authorities.
