HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaiian Humane Society has reported six cats and five dogs admitted by field service officers or members of the public, in 2024, as of Friday.

In 2023, there were 20 stray admissions of dogs, cats, and a rabbit at this point in the day following 4th of July, indicating a slight decrease of stray pets reported and found at this time of the year.

What you need to know if you have lost a pet:

    • First, go to their website and file a Lost Pet Report. You can also call their dispatch line at (808) 356-2250 to file a Lost Pet Report.
    • Ensure you have clear, current photos of your pet, your pet’s microchip number, proof of ownership and details on where/when they were most recently seen. These details can help to reunite you with your pet that much quicker.
    • Pet owners looking for their lost pet should also browse through the Found Pets section on their website to see if they’ve already been found and are in our care, or with another member of the public. These listings are updated every 15 minutes.
    • Acting fast is critically important because the mandatory stray hold (the amount of time an animal is held in a shelter before being spayed/neutered and made available for adoption to the general public) is 48 hours for un-microchipped pets and five days for microchipped pets.

If you have found a pet:

    • Immediately file a Found Pet Report on their website and take the pet to your nearest private veterinary clinic or one of Hawaiian Humane’s campuses during operating hours to be scanned for a microchip.
    • Because the shelter is over-capacity, we are asking for the community’s kōkua – if they are able to care for the stray pet temporarily so that they do not have to enter the stressful shelter environment, the Hawaiian Humane Society will work with them to reunite the pet with his/her owner.
    • If they are unable to temporarily care for the pet, they can bring the pet to the Hawaiian Humane Society’s Pet Kōkua Resource Center (admissions center) at our Mōʻiliʻili or Kosasa Family campuses.
