I scream, you scream, we all scream for free ice cream

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Did you know there’s a special day just for celebrating ice cream? It’s called National Ice Cream Day, and it’s taking place this Sunday, July 21.

This fun holiday was created in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan, who loved ice cream and wanted everyone to have a day to enjoy it.

National Ice Cream Day is a time when ice cream shops all over the United States offer special deals and sometimes even free ice cream.

Families and friends come together to enjoy this tasty treat in many different ways. Some people go out to their favorite ice cream parlors, while others might try making their own ice cream at home.

Take the Lee family from Kailua, for example. Every year on National Ice Cream Day, they have a tradition of visiting a local ice cream shop.

The shop they love has more than 50 flavors, ranging from classic vanilla and chocolate to unique ones like bubblegum and cotton candy. Each Lee picks a different flavor, and they spend the afternoon tasting each other’s choices and deciding on their favorite.

Another family, the Wongs from Hawaiʻi Kai, prefer to celebrate at home. They make ice cream sundaes with all sorts of toppings like sprinkles, chocolate and caramel syrups and fresh fruit jams and jellies.
