ATLANTA — An Oneida native is now one of the best masons in the country. Gavin Gerard, a student at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, took home the bronze medal in masonry at the SkillsUSA Championships in Atlanta at the end of June. A new Galesburg grocery store will be able to sell packaged liquor despite the objection of two City Council members. Galesburg Aldermen on Monday approved a Class C-1 liquor license for Save More, a new grocery expected to open within the next two week at 900 E. Main St., the former Sav A Lot. The license was approved 5-2, with Ward 3 Alderman Evan Miller and Ward 4 Alderman Dwight White casting no votes.

But what happens when NWS forecasters are in the line of fire for a storm? That was the situation facing the NWS office in Chicago last night (July 15, 2024) as a summer storm spawned a tornado outbreak across the region.
Two tornadoes confirmed in Marshall County Sunday night
A National Weather Service survey team has determined that 2 weak tornadoes touched down late Sunday night near Henry. The first one was a mile north of town. It was rated an EF-1 with 90 mile per hour winds. It was on the ground for 2 minutes, its length was under a half mile and its width was 50 yards. Several mobile homes were damaged. The storm also had damaging straight line winds in addition to the tornado. As soon as the first tornado lifted, a second tornado touched down 2 miles southeast of Henry in the Lake Wildwood area. The tornado was rated an EF-1 with 100 mile per hour winds. Its path was 6 miles long and the maximum width was 100 yards. It was on the ground for 3 minutes before lifting 2 miles northwest of Varna. Extensive tree damage was reported.
National Weather Service Confirms Three EF-1 Tornadoes In Quad Cities Area
(Davenport, IA) -- The National Weather Service is confirming at least three tornados touched down in the QCA from Monday's derecho. Andy Ervin with the National Weather Service says one moved through Davenport into Bettendorf before crossing the Mississippi River into Illinois. Another was on the ground for eight miles between Taylor Ridge and Andover. A third touched down near Kewanee.
