Multiple crews respond to chemical leak at Hopewell water plant

HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — Crews from multiple agencies responded to a chemical leak at a plant in Hopewell on Friday.

According to an official Facebook post , at around 10:35 a.m. on Friday, July 5, Hopewell Fire and EMS was alerted to a chemical leak at the VA American Water plant, located at 900 Industrial Street in Hopewell.

Hopewell Fire and EMS crews responded with one engine, a medic unit and a Battalion Chief. Once they arrived at the scene, they determined there was a hazardous chemical leak within the plant.

According to officials, the Battalion Chief requested additional help from the Crater Regional Hazardous Materials Team, which brought further aid from crews with the Prince George County Fire and EMS, Colonial Heights Fire and EMS and Fort-Gregg-Adams Fire Department.

Once the Crater Regional Hazmat Team was set up, hazmat crews entered the plant area to locate and turn off the chemical. According to officials, numerous crews were rotated out due to the high heat index .

According to authorities, the incident was marked under control at around 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Officials said there were no injuries and “at no point was there a hazard or risk to citizens and visitors of the City of Hopewell.”

Volunteer members with the Petersburg Fire Support 6 and the Metro Richmond Flying Squad assisted crews at the scene with additional needs due to the heat advisory in effect.
