Veteran parade-goer becomes participant, thanks to community's helping hands
ALTON — Norman Crawford, a veteran who lives in Alton, had one request: to go to the Alton Old Home Day parade. His wish, and more, came true. A Facebook post by Helping Hands for the Lakes Region, a local nonprofit that helps seniors and disabled adults, connected Crawford with a ride to Alton Old Home Day last weekend, and he even got to ride on the American Legion parade float.
Falling Embers Pause Part of Oak Bluffs Fireworks
A portion of the Oak Bluffs fireworks was cut short Friday after strong winds coming off the water resulted in burning embers falling into the nearby crowd. The annual fireworks display is viewed by hundreds of people at Ocean Park. Sherry Connor has been indicted and arrested on multiple charges in connection with the death of a juvenile in Laconia, on Dec. 24, 2019, police say. A Belknap County Grand Jury indicted Connor, 61, on charges of manslaughter for recklessly causing the death of the juvenile, according to a media statement from Department of Safety on behalf of State Police Col. Mark Hall, Laconia Police Chief Matt Canfield and Belknap County Attorney Keith Cormier on Aug. 16.
