    4th of July fireworks, parades: See Hornell, Andover Independence Day schedules

    Those looking for fun and excitement on the Fourth of July should look no further than Hornell and Andover.

    Hornell may be better known for its St. Patrick's Day celebrations , but the Maple City is no slouch when it comes to the Fourth of July.

    The day in Hornell includes the Fourth of July parade, free swimming at the city pool, New York Collegiate Baseball League action and a fireworks display after dark.

    Meanwhile, all roads lead to Andover on July 4, where thousands spend the holiday each year at the Independence Day celebration sponsored by the Andover Fourth of July Committee.

    The party will be louder and longer this year because the Allegany County town is celebrating its Bicentennial, with four days of activities scheduled.

    First called Bakers or Bakerstown, according to the Allegany County Historical Society , the Town of Andover was formed from Independence on Jan. 28, 1824.

    Here are the holiday schedules in Hornell and Andover

    Hornell Fourth includes parade, free swimming, baseball and fireworks

    Hornell’s Independence Day Parade is scheduled for noon with lineup at 11 a.m. in the Community Bank parking lot.

    The parade will step off from Genesee Street, turn left onto Seneca Street, make another left onto Main Street and conclude at Bank Street.

    Whether you drive, march, hitch a ride on a parade float or just amble along the roughly one-mile route, Hornell Partners for Growth is encouraging the entire community to celebrate America’s independence at this Maple City tradition.

    There will be no Main Street vendors due to ongoing construction .

    Enjoy free swimming all day at the city pool in Veterans Memorial Park at James Street . The hours are 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mayor John Buckley is sponsoring the free swim day.

    Enjoy America’s pastime at Maple City Park, where the Horne l l Steamers will host the Dansville Gliders. Game time is 5 p.m.

    The Hornell fireworks display will be at 10 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park at James Street, Thursday, July 4.

    Andover Fourth features parade, music, carnival, fireworks display

    The traditional Fourth of July Parade is at 10 a.m. on Main Street.

    A carnival, with kids’ rides and merchant and food vendors, will be held at Andover Central School throughout the day.

    Live music on the school grounds with Sam and Dan, Longshot and Louie and the Peelers from 8 p.m. until dusk.

    The Andover fireworks display will be after dark on Thursday, July 4.

    Andover Bicentennial Celebration continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday

    Friday, July 5

    • Historical Walk through the village of Andover, all day. Maps provided at the Andover Historical Society, East Greenwood Street, and signage will be posted at featured stops.
    • Kids Movie Night on the school grounds. Gates open at 7:30 p.m., movie at 8:15 p.m. Ice cream, popcorn, and water will be provided free, courtesy of the Andover Chamber of Commerce. Bring your own chairs and blankets.
    • Andover Haunted House Party. Live music by “Lucky Number,” food truck,  6-10 p.m.

    Saturday, July 6

    • Pickleball tournament in the school gym, beginning at noon. Visit the Andover Bicentennial Facebook page to for more details.
    • Grease, Gears and Grooves Car Show, with DJ and food vendors, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on school grounds, free.
    • Talk by Craig Braack, retired Allegany County historian, “A Brief Look at the Railroad History of Allegany County,” 2 p.m., Andover Historical Society, East Greenwood Street.
    • Foam Glow Party, school grounds, 7-10 p.m., free.
    • Live music by “Off The Wagon,” food truck, at The Village Pub, Main Street. Music from 6-10 p.m., food truck all day.

    Sunday, July 7

    • Ecumenical Church Service, school grounds at 11 a.m., refreshments provided, free. Please bring your own chairs.
