Steamers win eighth straight over Hitmen, despite two home runs from Procopio

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WETM) – The Hornell Steamers are continuing a dominant season.

Hornell defeated the Horseheads Hitmen 13-5, on Friday. The Steamers extended their NYCBL lead, earning their 8th straight victory. The high scoring matchup opened with a 1st inning home run from Horseheads grad, Matt Procopio.

One inning later, Hornell delivered 6 runs to take the lead. Markus Brehm and Devin Mersmann pushed 5 RBI across, on 2 home runs, before Alex Dupuy added an earned tally. In the bottom half, Haverling’s A.J. Brotz smacked a solo home run, cutting Hornell’s lead to 4. In the 3rd, the Steamers plated 2 additional runs, before Procopio (4-5) cracked his 2nd solo homer of the day.

Anthony Franco would add another home run for the Hitmen in the 6th, but Hornell responded with a 2-RBI single from Nicolas Schwing. In the bottom of the 7th, Horseheads grad Lucas Granger hit an RBI-double to cut the Hitmen deficit to 5. In the following frames, the Steamers sealed the win with solo home runs from Dupuy, Schwing, and a 2nd from Mersmann.

The Hitmen next begin a 3-game road trip. Horseheads travels to Olean on Saturday at 7 p.m. before playing a Sunday doubleheader in Genesee.

Hornell will look for their 9th straight win on Saturday, as they host Salamanca. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. at Maple City Park.
