ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – The Hornell Steamers’ win streak continued, while the Elmira Pioneers and Horseheads Hitmen fell.

The Hornell Steamers pushed their win streak to 10 straight games, on Sunday. The NYCBL’s best team, defeated Dansville 6-3 on road. Hornell shutout the Gliders through 5 frames, before giving up a run in each inning. The Steamers’ pitching combination of Wesley Carter, Danik Reed, and Eli Fuselier totaled 7 strikeouts, while allowing the same number of hits. Rustin Pope led Hornell at the plate, going (2-3) with a hit and a run.

Elsewhere in the NYCBL, the Horseheads Hitmen suffered a pair of defeats in Genesee. Just hours after a Saturday walk-off loss to Olean, the Hitmen fell on a walk-off walk to the Rapids. The 5-4 loss in Game 1 was highlighted by a 2-run home run from Horseheads grad, Lucas Granger. In Game 2, Genesee’s pitching staff held Horseheads to 1 hit, and took the 3-2 victory.

The Hitmen will return home on Monday, to try and stop the Hornell Steamers’ win streak. Hornell and Horseheads will face-off in a rare 10:30 a.m. game, which will be free for fans to attend.

In the PGCBL, the Elmira Pioneers fell to the Auburn Doubledays, 8-5. Auburn stormed out of the gates with a 5-run 1st inning, which included a 2-run homer from Tyler Lejune. In the 3rd, Elmira battled back with a 4-run rally of their own. Andy Schroeder loaded the bases for the Pios, before Cooper Smith popped up a sac fly to score the opening run. Ayden Frey followed up with a short base hit into left, plating Schroeder and Aidan Grabowski. Frey would then steal from 2nd to 3rd, and score on a pass ball.

Ayden Frey (#12) is greeted by teammates after a 2-RBI double, steal, and run to cap off the Pios 3rd inning rally.

The Doubledays would quickly counter the Pios rally in the 4th, as Trevor Murray delivered a 2-RBI single. Scoring would cease until the 7th frame, when Max LaLime blasted an RBI-double of his own. Elmira’s scoring efforts would go silent for the reminder of the game, while Zach Bale added an Auburn issuance run in the 9th.

Elmira hits the road on Monday, for a 7:05 p.m. start against Newark.
