Construction of the Hornell Tim Hortons on Seneca Street is scheduled to be completed next month and if progress continues at its current pace, Canada's largest quick-service restaurant chain will make its Maple City debut before the leaves change colors.

Empire Commercial Construction began work in late April on the 1,600-square-foot store at 111 Seneca St., formerly the site of a McDonald's and medical offices. The existing building was demolished late last year.

The Seneca Street Tim Hortons is patterned after the Tim Hortons store in Olean and will have inside seating for more than a dozen people and additional areas to relax outside. The store will have WiFi.

The drive-thru will fit about 16 vehicles at maximum capacity, looping around the building and the site with entrances and exits on both Seneca and Bennett streets.

Franchise owner Blake Tarana of TAR Enterprises said he's hopeful the building will be done in late August, allowing the store to open sometime in September.

“As long as everything goes smooth it should be the second week in September to open," Tarana said. “The city of Hornell has been very cooperative with us. Everything we needed for building codes and permits they have been very responsive and very helpful.”

Tarana said the store will employee 25 to 30 people and be open every day of the year with the exception of Christmas. Store hours will be 5 a.m. until 9 p.m.

A behemoth in Canada and Western New York, Tim Hortons is best known for coffee, doughnuts, breakfast sandwiches and Timbits, the famous bite-sized, sweet Canadian dough balls.

According to analysts, the chain generated approximately $3.97 billion in U.S. dollars in 2023. There are more than 600 locations in the U.S.
