HORSEHEADS, N.Y. ( WETM ) — An elevator is shut down after a fire at a nursing facility in Chemung County prompted a response from several fire departments.

According to an 18 News reporter at the scene, around 11 a.m. flames and smoke were reported near an elevator inside the Elcore Nursing Facility in Horseheads on Friday, July 26, as several trucks from Horseheads and Town and Country fire departments arrived to assist.

According to Town and Country Fire Chief Sean McInerney, a room that housed the controls to the elevators possibly experienced several arc flashes, which might’ve caused the fire. McInerney said he doesn’t believe it was a hydraulics fire.

McInerney said two people from Elcore helped put out the fire before firefighters arrived, and they were taken to the hospital for evaluation, but no one was inside of the elevator during the fire.

McInerney reported that Smoke and other dry chemicals in the air were blown out from the building using fans.

Crews are working at Elcore to get a second elevator up and running while the other is shut down.
