Water Woes in North Carolina, 6 Rivers Fail Fecal Bacteria Tests Near Washington and Bath
North Carolina's ongoing struggle with water quality has come to the fore once again. A report by Sound Rivers, an organization that monitors water quality, shows that six river sites failed their weekly fecal bacteria tests. Notably, sites such as Havens Gardens in Washington and Bonner Point in Bath showed elevated levels of fecal bacteria, which poses a risk for gastrointestinal diseases and skin infections.

Jenna Biggins has been promoted to the position of assistant athletic director for internal operations at Tusculum University announced Josh Ealy, Vice President of Athletics. Biggins is responsible for the day-to-day, internal operations of the athletic department, which includes management and supervision of all budget activity for the University’s 23 intercollegiate sports including team travel, supplies and recruiting expenditures. ABCCM breaks ground on Safe Haven shelter
Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM) broke ground July 16 on a shelter for women and children. Safe Haven will be an emergency shelter operating 24/7 and year-round. It will provide 36 beds for single women, women with children and up to two intact families. Safe Haven is on the same property as Transformation Village, ABBCM’s transitional housing shelter that provides beds for up to 100 women and children.

Mission Nurses’ Strike on the Horizon
Mission nurses are talking of a potential strike due to staffing issues. Activists in the area are attempting to help these nurses by raising money in case of a strike. On Open Air’s series, People’s Radio Hour, Rosemary Lord joined Jennifer Hampton to discuss the strike and how they’re working to support the Mission nurses union. Lord explained that as a longtime socialist, supporting workers is one of her key values.
